Have you ever seen a father & daughter dance at her wedding? 👰 🎩 The idea of it gives me goosebumps. Cultures around the entire globe have traditions around dance 💃. Dance brings families together. Dance sends the rain (in some cultural beliefs). Dance is in a sense a bon voyage for some. Dance really builds community, improves the fitness of those participating and positively impacts mindsets.

The following blog is all about dance: what science tells us, real stories from my upbringing and simple steps to implement. If you stay to the end I share a program I am absolutely excited and honored to share with you.

Dance Strategy 1: Know and Share The Benefits Of Dance To Your Family, Friends & Co-Workers 💃 ⠀
⠀
Check out this article that shares the benefits of dance. I especially love the benefit of improved psychological well-being. Whats your favorite?⠀

Dance Strategy 2: Use The Fun Of Dance As A Cover For A Weight Loss Program 🤣

I didn’t have any PE in high school until my senior year & wasn’t involved in any sports.⠀
⠀
However, I was in an elite music group where we danced and sang all over the USA (about 40 gigs a year). There were 10 girls (4 altos, 4 sopranos and 2 split) & 10 guys (4 tenors, 4 bass and 2 split) and we spent an hour every day after school where we’d either sing, dance, or a combo of the 2.⠀

I never questioned my body image, weight or hated the skin I was in. I also was always on the go and didn’t snack much (mom was so kind as to make our dinners and often reminded me to eat my lunch 😂).

I LOVED showbiz 💫. The idea of being able to get paid to perform for high level people as a high school student blew me away. I was never really sitting still for any moments in high school.

Every weekend we weren’t gigging somewhere we were selling hot dogs 🌭, 🍔 and 🍟 at the stadiums in Seattle (Mariners, Seahawks, and University of Washington Huskies). That’s how we would fund our trips and our $600 dresses. Standing for 8-10 hours fundraising for our trips kept us burning calories we didn’t really think about. If we got bored and it got slow we’d practice our dance routines and our singing parts. We knew we were good and we wanted to be the best nation wide.

I never remember hearing any one of the other 9 girls say, ‘man I need to go on a diet.’

Most people don’t think dance is the kind of physical activity that burns a lot of calories but for us, it was due to the amount of repeat, rehearsals, performances, tempo changes, etc.

Dance Strategy 3: Dance To Improve Your Memory!
⠀
⠀
There are dance combinations I learned my my first year in show choir in high school 😆 . That was over 19 years ago 😮
⠀
Here’s an interesting video of dancing & memory from Dr. Zorba out of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. They found it to use more memory than fitness classes alone because of the repeat functionality of it as well as the tempo portion. If you haven’t taken a dance class yet, I highly recommend it! If you’re on a budget, I recommend looking for a beginner dance video on YouTube in the genre you prefer (ballet, tap, hip hop, swing, etc).
⠀
Let’s all grab a dancing 🕺 partner or dance by ourselves in our homes or 🚗 ‘s this week!⠀
⠀
Y’all down?! 🤣

This is my yearbook my sophomore year and I’m dancing bottom left with my arms shrugged as a part of the “Your mama don’t dance and your daddy don’t rock and roll” dance we performed. Mr. C autographed it too!

Dance Strategy 4: Dancing & Mental Health?⠀
⠀
Dancing can help adolescent girls with their mental health.⠀Check out this article from the National Institute Of Health. They did an intervention with 112 adolescent girls ages 13-18years. 54 of them were selected for the dance portion and 24 were interviewed. They found from those they interviewed 5 categories of how dance helped them with their internalization of their stresses. The 5 categories include: 1) An Oasis from stress, 2) Supportive Togetherness, 3) Enjoyment & Empowerment, 4) Finding Acceptance & Trust in Own Ability, & 5) Dance as emotional expression.
⠀
I’m so grateful I got to dance all through high school for the Governor of Hawaii, all the school district superintendants Of Washington, Disney®, Sonics® NBA, & more 💃🏽⠀

Our director fought against society norms to get men in the group dancing. He fought against the grain that we were a low income school and would never amount to anything good. He believed so strongly in a better future for every single one of us members, that many of us today are professionals in law, education, entertainment, CEOs, and more. Thank you Mr. Crouse for your diligent work when no one really believed in us but you.

I interviewed Mr. C for my podcast, episode 1. Check it out here if you haven’t listened yet.

Who’s ready to get some dancing on? 🤸‍♀️⠀

This is Natasha and I right outside of our dorm room for jazz/show choir camp at the College of the Siskiyous in Weed, California. This was the summer between our freshman and sophomore year I believe. She was the best dancer and I was the worst #Roomies. I focused on her abilities the first couple days of camp and was really depressed. Then I decided to focus on what I could get better at (after a talk with my bro) and enjoyed the experience more, learned more and later became one of the best dancers my second summer in attendance. She’s a music educator and trainer to other music teachers in Texas and Cali.

Dance Strategy 5: Find Dance Curriculum When You Know You Can’t Create It Yourself.

The Move Happy Facilitator Program© Includes Dance! I’m Super excited, honored & proud to share my 16-week program with you! It is something I actually facilitated to my former patients in a psychiatric hospital.⠀

We ran the program 4 days a week and each week included a topic like how I share with you every week! All weekly topics were related to happiness from what I researched.⠀
⠀
I created a psychological questionnaire to measure happiness (simple 1-pager) & a fitness questionnaire to measure fitness so you and your participants can track progress throughout.⠀
⠀
My patients improved for the most part in both areas consistently and spread news about the group around the hospital 💜 ⠀
⠀
Each day includes:⠀
⠀
Journaling 📓 (pre-designed questions I created)⠀
Group Discussion of the daily topic (a subtopic of the weekly)⠀
&⠀
Workouts 🏋️‍♀️ With Minimal Equipment (about 20-30min workouts)
⠀
I recreated the workouts via video example (demo not full) so you don’t have to be a fitness expert to run the program.⠀
⠀
I’m looking for program testers that are willing to give me a testimony to increase the trust factor (honest testimony of course). ⠀
⠀
To the first ✌️ that email me a receipt of order, I’m sending you some swag once you’ve had a chance to try the program out and give me an honest review.⠀
⠀
